Parker jolted awake. His skin was damp with sweat, and his heart rate was through the roof. He gained consciousness of his surroundings.

The cabin. The fire was still dancing shadows off the walls and wooden floor before him. It was pitch black outside. He was still here, and still very much alone.

"I fell asleep," he said aloud, in hopes to feel better. He shut his laptop and walked to the kitchen. Standing in front of the sink, he splashed his face with cool water from the faucet.

He looked at the clock on the microwave. It was 2am.

He hadn't even made it through the first night yet. "Alright, the first night is the hardest." He zombied towards the bedroom, when something clicked in his mind.

The gun... He hurried back to the couch and grabbed it. The fire was only embers now, so he wouldn't need to put it out before moving to the bed. It would die out on its own.

He turned from the couch and began to head back to the bedroom when something caught his eye. He turned to the window.

"What?" He froze in his tracks. Unless his eyes were failing him, he'd thought he saw a light outside. But there was nothing else around this place for miles. Nothing. There would be nothing out here to produce a light.

He slowly walked over to the window and peered around the curtain. It was pitch black. The cabin didn't even have an outside light.

"I saw a light!" he yelled out. Parker let out a hard sigh and ripped the curtains closed. What are the chances somebody's out there?

His muscles tightened, and he realized he had gripped so tightly on the gun that the metal was cutting into the side of his thumb. He yanked his hand out and shook it.

You're tired. You probably saw a flash of an animal’s eyes or something.

As if a coyote or other nocturnal animal in the woods outside of Yosemite National Park would be safer than something else that could produce that flash of light.

With the gun in hand, he stumbled back to the bedroom.
